Production

The production crew is hard at work transitioning from winter to spring and summer crops. We will soon be hitting peak harvest numbers for baby and head lettuces. We continue to incorporate our winter rye plantings in preparation for early and mid summer plantings, which will provide key nutrients for our vegetable crops, decreasing our reliance on outside fertilizers. Finally, we are ramping up seeding both in the greenhouse and direct seeding in our fields. Recently planted crops include basil, eggplant, scallions, heirloom tomatoes, hybrid tomatoes, peppers, and more!

Community

Our last adult cooking class of the season finished with great success and a great turn out. Our Kids Cooking Class is coming up April 27th! If you are interested email beth@spourtingfarms.org! All youth ages are welcome, including their guardians. We will be cooking at the Graham House from 11am to 2pm.

Our educational potlucks are a time for local farmers and community members to come together and learn about food, farming, gardening, nutrition, and so much more! Come join in on a farm tour from 5:00 pm — 5:45 pm at Sprouting Farms. 4661 Route 3 And 12, Talcott, WV 24981. Then we will have an educational talk, followed by a potluck, from 6:00 pm — 7:30 pm at the Graham House, down the road from the farm. WV-12, Pence Springs, WV 24962. There will be a different educational topic each month!

May 9: Lean Farming — How lean farming helps to maximize values and profits, while minimizing waste.

June 13: Community Gardening — What is community gardening and how can I join in? Hear results from a two year study of community gardening in West Virginia.

July 11: Gardening 101 — Let’s learn from each other about the ins and outs of market gardening.

August 8: Growing Herbs — How to grow Basil, Dill, Oregano, Sage, and Rosemary.

September 12: Mushrooms — How to grow and identify mushrooms, and how to use them.

Please bring a dish of your choose to share with 10–20 people.

All are welcome. Bring friends, family, and kiddos!

The Alderson Community Food Hub will be having gardening classes at the Alderson Community Garden! They are open to the public for all to join in! The garden is location across from the Alderson Hospitality House on the Monroe side of Alderson.

June 22: Garden Soil Implements, 1pm

August 24: Garden Weeding, 1pm

September 21: Put your Garden to Rest, 1pm

Education

It’s Spring and the Education department is getting our demonstration plots ready for future training events. So far we have planted radishes, spinach, sweet peas, and snow peas. The demonstration plots will be used for farming and market gardening training. Some of the future trainings will include direct seeding, transplanting, harvesting, weeding, and pest control. Look out for listing of future trainings. Hope to see you at the farm!
