Practice at keeping your distance

Written by Jodi Hooper

Edited by Stuart Gerard Walker

I’m not happy with television

(I barely saw anyone)

two days ago the news comes out

everyone is indoors

I’m mad

with proximity —

from what I read most people don’t believe

in psychic vampires

(I don’t know how)

to approach a stranger

Hi,

(I need to feed)

Could I walk with your family?

and they all kept their distance

I’m mad with proximity

I was told everyone in town was afraid

(I got a backup plan for that, but damn)

how am i supposed to go

a hundred feet away?

Hold my feeding hand and look

into my evil eye

I’m not happy with television

I barely saw anyone

(Could I walk with your family?)

Jodi Hooper is a poet, fiction writer, and 2020 graduate of the University of Louisville. Her work explores themes of the body and the fraught experience of human connection by way of carnivorous plants, vampirism, and the ever-closing gap between monster and man. Jodi’s poetry has most recently appeared in Folx Gallery’s Absolute Pleasure exhibition.

“Practice at Keeping Your Distance” is an erasure of an entry posted to an online forum for self-proclaimed psychic vampires, who are facing the new challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and are struggling — as we all have been — to adapt.
