Darkness is Greedy

A poem on the inevitable

Darkness is greedy.

It desires to consume everything,
viciously spreading, until
nothing is in sight.

Only the brave light candles
because they desire to see.
I don’t mind living in the dark,
as long as I know where I need to go —
walking from room to room
in familiar fashion,
passing moments in anticipation
until we’ve reached a moment
that leaves faster than we could imagine.

Are you brave?
Would you like to see?
Will you be the light that the darkness fears?
Will you be the space it tries so hard to take?

Your light is small, but infectious —
Two wicks can share the same light,
spreading from one to another
bringing feelings of hope and salvation
bringing fiction to life,
bringing life from the night.

Because to defeat darkness, you do not need candles. You simply need hope.
