Why Coming Out As Sober Was So Difficult

It felt like I was delivering bad news.
Announcing I would not longer be drinking felt like telling some of my long-term friends that I was partially breaking up with them.
We would still be friends obviously, but things would never be the same again.
Until I quit drinking, there was an unspoken truth amongst my friendship groups that every lunch date would involve a bottle of Merlot, every celebration, a bottle of Prosecco, Pimms in the summer, Baileys at Christmas.. and on and on….
We were just all brainwashed into believing alcohol was an essential ingredient to enhance all social events. The tried and tested method that until this moment, we had never veered away from.
Yet here I was announcing that I am.
So, after decades of drunken shenanigans, tipsy lunches and sloshed BBQs, it did feel like I was announcing FUTURE CANCELLED to some of them.
No wonder I was apprehensive about it
Although it felt like I was letting them all down in some way, ditching alcohol was something I just had to do.
Obviously, I told the people closest to me straight away. There was no way not to really, when I’m suddenly cracking open the Pepsi Max instead of the Pinot Grigio, and I’m too old to get away with trying to claim I might be pregnant.
But for everyone else, I got so nervous and put it off for so long, I decided to announce it in one big ripping off of the plaster moment by posting my 6-month sobriety blog on my Facebook page for all my friends and family to read.
