If Social Media Existed During the Bubonic Plague

I believe if social media were readily available during the Black Death people would be saying similar things to what we’re seeing now. Lords from their castles: Social distancing is key! Keep six…

How to Brainstorm the Perfect Idea for Writing A Story?

As we are grappling with the Covid-19 outbreak, and have plenty of time in hand, let your mind wander and write down a story that you can hold close to your heart, or share with your close friends.

If you are thinking on these lines, we have 5 smart tips for brainstorming ideas for the perfect story writing:

1. Be observant

In a word full of distractions, from the morning alarm to the fading light of your smartphone before dozing off, finding a sane and sensible idea seems impossible. But amid this chaos and cacophony lies zillions of ideas to inspire budding writers like you.

Put down your smartphone and earbuds for some time, and observe the nature around you-people, trees, roads, and possibly everything under the sky. Many great writings have been inspired by the very common and the mundane things we fail to notice, right in front of our eyes.

2. A notebook never gets old

It’s an old school of thought but has done wonders for many writers. Keep a pen and notebook in your bag or purse to note down anything interesting that catches your attention.

From your regular grocery shop guy, a leaky tap across the road, a bird chirping on the porch, a sneaky squirrel down the garden, to anything ordinary, ideas pop up, any time, and practically, anywhere.

So, have something to record those moments that you’re unable to release from your mind.

3. Do you have a secret box?

It may sound crazy, but that’s what holds a boundless treasure of ideas. The box can be anything, made from an old shoebox to toy storage, from postcards, souvenirs, news clipping, photos, magazine cuttings, old crayons, pens/erasers to anything and everything that wins your attention.

This box is nothing but a farrago of miscellaneous facts and fiction of your life, including childhood. Whenever you feel lost, open this box and rummage through it to spark new energy and enthusiasm.

4. Be random

How often has it happened that you have failed to scribble a single line, let alone a story? Well, ask any great writer, and you’ll find that it is pretty common to fail!

Do you know what the queen of murder mystery books, Agatha Christie, once said: “the best time for planning a book is while you’re doing the dishes.”

Instead of letting the failure get the better of you, take a break and do anything else that occupies your mind. From sweeping, mopping, gardening, cleaning to any other household chore is a good practice to let your subconscious mind play.

Also, this makes you feel good about yourself. Do not expect the ‘Eureka moment’ overnight. Let things play out on their own while you’re trying to get hold of the tangent.

Quick note down if anything concrete comes into your mind.

5. A Happy State of Mind

Feeling upset or dejected for lack of story ideas is normal, but do not let this disappointment stay in your mind forever! Having a positive frame of mind can offer profound insights to lead a meaningful life.

Sorrows and sadness are part and parcel of life, but rebuilding your life out of the deep shadows is what ironically keeps many writers afloat.
