Few Important Life Lessons Which 2017 Taught Me

As I struggle to write my first post of 2018 which is about things from the past, I realize the year which flew by (literally) was one of the most important years of my existence. A lot happened in my personal and professional world. I want to openly accept that I am truly happy to give both parts of my world equal attention and I am immensely satisfied how things have changed in my space.

While 2017 did give me a few ups and downs, it also taught me some of the most important lessons of a lifetime. So here I am throwing few words of wisdom at you.

1. Prioritize your health
Your body is your temple and it will be your constant companion which will be by your side in every breath you take, every place you visit, every meal you eat and will be with you in the journey to your old age. You should, I should….we should take better care of it.

2. Watch movies
A couple of years ago, I was not much into movies. The reason being, sitting at a place till 2 to 3 hours felt like a lot of commitment which I was not ready to give.
There was a time when I suddenly felt the need to watch movies which were inspired by real life and that made me set my target. In 2016 I watched 81 movies and in 2017 the number was 52.

What I learnt is that movies are not just inspired by life, they are an actual depiction of scenarios which we face in real life (the situations may vary from person to person). They do help in tackling situations, inspire you, motivate you and gives glimpses of different personalities which you have not or yet to encounter.

3. Read
I won’t say that I learn the importance of reading in 2017 since childhood this was poured into my ears by my parents, then teachers and later by some “wise men”. With daily nuisance and laziness and my anti commitment to books, made me run away from them.

One thing which I learnt in 2017 is, talking to people on different topics does give you a lot of knowledge but you can only gain more expertise once you read and explore the topic.

As the fine saying goes “The Man Who Does Not Read Has No Advantage Over the Man Who Cannot Read”.

4. How you fill the empty spaces?
My Mom is my inspiration who has taught me the habit of constantly doing something. She would often stitch a sweater while watching TV or revamp her garden on a fine Sunday. She always has and still now tells me to utilize the short and long breaks in my life and pick up a hobby.

The kind of hobby you take up and the ripples of other habits it creates defines one of the finest nature of you, and this habit plays a pivotal role in shaping your future.

5. There is a time to stop and let things go
You had a dream, you gave up everything to chase it, you struggled and you worked hard……after all this, you didn’t make it. Trust me, friend, it’s okay. Let it go because there are other paths that are waiting for you to explore.

6. Live a few days of your life without the things you desired to buy
As I moved away from my home city and struggle to settle in my new location, here’s a very personal exercise which I did last year. While setting up my house, I paid utmost attention to the things which I genuinely needed (like mattress, curtains, cushions, utensils etc) and went ahead and bought them. For others which were more for decor, I made a list of all those things and kept it for later to buy. With a few passing days, I realized that I didn’t really need them and scratched them off from my list.

This did help me invest my money wisely.

7. Ask questions till you get the desired answer
I learnt this habit from a very special person. I remember often running to him with few thoughts in my mind and he would bombard me with millions of questions about How, Why and Whats and I would struggle with appropriate answers to prove my stand.

It’s extremely important to know what you aim to do, what is the output you are looking for and what required steps on this journey will help you achieve it. This entire exercise of finding true answers to your questions does give you the much clarity to look for in life.

8. It’s good to take feedback
We all feel happy to hear positive words of appreciation and on the other hand, it pinches a bit when someone utters few negative words. If you understand that the person who is making the effort to tell you the truth, wants to see you successful, the feeling of resentment will simply wash off your mind.

9. Save your penny
My friend, saving is important. Keep aside a fraction of your monthly income and attach a dream to it. It can be for your dream car, the next trip you want to take, for emergency medical bills or gift your parents something special for their anniversary.

10. The small little things
I used to think (and do) that buying a huge gift on my next trip to my parents or taking them out for a luxury lunch is what my parents look out for. I was so wrong.
The morning walks with my Dad, helping my Mom in the kitchen, teasing my brother on his busy times are some of the things we all cherish together.

As I write the last few lines of this article, I realize that life has indeed made a 20 something girl a lot mature.
