On Friday, June 2, a catastrophic crash involving three trains in the Indian state of Odisha has killed 288 people and over 1175 injured. The horrific accident took place around 19:00 IST (13:30 GMT) near the Bahanaga Bazar station, Balasore. When the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, headed towards Chennai, derailed. It collided with a goods train on the adjacent track, causing the 21 carriages of the Coromandel Express to veer off onto the third track. The Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, coming from the opposite direction on the third track, rammed into the derailed coaches.

With over 100 bodies from Balasore triple train accident pilling up in different hospitals here awaiting identification, AIIMS, Bhubaneswar has started DNA sampling of the claimants.Most of the victims belonged to West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu besides Odisha.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the restoration work at the Balasore collision site on June 4, said that the accident happened due to a change in electronic interlocking.

Ashwini Vaishnaw while speaking to ANI said “The commissioner of railway safety has investigated the matter and let the investigation report come but we have identified the cause of the incident and the people responsible for it… It happened due to a change in electronic interlocking,”

Three agencies — CBI, Commissioner of Railway safety (CRS) and GRP, Balasore — have begun inquiry into the Balasore triple train crash.

As the investigation unfolded, Khurda Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Rinkesh Roy suspected outside physical tampering of equipment for which the Coromandel express entered into the loop line and hit the iron laden goods train causing triple train crash on June 2.

Roy said when the Coromandel express passed through Bahanaga Bazar station, there was green signal on the main line. The signal is usually green when all the pre-conditions required for the signal to go green are perfect. If any of the pre-conditions does not meet, technically the signal can never turn green. Unless and until anyone tampers with the signal system, it remains red, Roy said.

Stating that the railways has a system called data logger where each event starting from the pushing of signal buttons gets recorded, the DRM said that the “data logger shows that there was green signal. It can’t be possible unless someone has tampered with it.”
