Optimized Resumes Win

For all you job seekers out there wondering if cold applications still get jobs, the answer is yes.

Although networking fills 70% of executive positions, cold applications still fill 30% of these positions.

What are cold applications?

This includes applying on LinkedIn, Glassdoor, directly on company websites, and the rest of the specialty job sites in order to land your dream job.

What’s a dream job?

Simple.

The three S’s of salary, seniority, and satisfaction.

If one is missing, you will be unsatisfied with your role.

If all are present, you’re going to be excited for the role.

During these hyper competitive times, with tech layoffs and other industries trimming the fat as well, it’s important to position yourself for success.

This means that your resume needs to be tailored for each role you apply for.

You may have gotten your resume done by your brother-in-law, Charles, who is an executive resume writer.

It’s not a bad idea to keep the money in the family.

I fully support that.

We need to practice a “circular economy” to break the chains of intergenerational poverty.

Or maybe you use EnhanceCV, which I also recommend.

In either case, you must make sure that a computerized system, not a human, tailored your resume for each position when you go to apply.

Unlike the 1980s, when your resume was sent through the mail on paper and read by a real human, everything is digitized these days.

Today, 97% of large companies use ATS (applicant tracking system) filters to see if keywords from their role are on your resume as well.

They are looking for a keyword match percentage.

This process is done by a computer, not a human.

If you have the percentage of keywords that they are looking for, a human will then read your application.

If it doesn’t, your application will not be read by a human, and will go to the archive folder.

I don’t blame them.

If I had one hundred applications to review for one role, I would want some help too.

Therefore, you need to make sure you have an 85% minimum match rate between your resume and their job description.

However, just like they have a computer on their end filtering our resumes, you need a computer to make sure your resume makes the cut.

Just like you cannot figure out what 18.53 x 37.76 equals as fast as your calculator on your phone can, you cannot determine if your resume is keyword matched as well as a computer program can.

You can do it yourself, which may take much longer than you’d like and end up costing you a lot of money due to the time you’re not working. Or you can work with me, who specializes in helping Black men land their dream job all the time.

Either way, I wish you luck.

Best,
