The Mysterious Disappearance of Karen Adams

The 54-year-old vanished after visiting a casino in 2007 and her family is still searching for her.

Karen Adams loved to gamble. The 54-year-old worked two jobs and didn’t have a lot of free time, but she enjoyed going to the Mountaineer Gaming Resort in New Cumberland, West Virginia, when she had a few hours to spare. She spent the morning of Sunday, March 11, 2007, at a bingo tournament near her home in Independence Township, Pennsylvania. At 2:00 pm, she decided to head for the Mountaineer.

Around 8:00 pm, Karen called her brother, John, at the home they shared. He was out at the time, so she left a message on the answering machine telling him she was still at the casino and had managed to lose all the cash she brought with her. She wasn’t particularly concerned about this; she simply used her ATM card to withdraw some more money and kept on gambling.

Karen remained at the casino until the early hours of Monday morning. She was seen on surveillance camera leaving the resort around 3:00 am, but she never made it home. Her absence was immediately noticed by her supervisor at the Allegheny Valley School in Robinson Township, Pennsylvania. She had been working as an aide for mentally and physically disabled students there for more than three years and had never missed a day of work. The fact that she hadn’t called or shown up told her co-workers that something was wrong.

Karen was also scheduled to work a shift at her second job that evening; she was a cashier at a Big Lots store in the Green Garden Plaza in Hopewell Township, Pennsylvania. She had always been a reliable employee who never failed to show up when scheduled, so the fact that she was a no-show further solidified the fact that something was amiss.

Members of Karen’s family immediately launched a search for the missing woman. They knew that she would always drive the same 28-mile route from the Mountaineer casino to the home she shared with John. They repeatedly drove along this route, looking for any sign of Karen or her maroon 2005 Suzuki Forenza. They found nothing to indicate that Karen had gotten into any kind of accident or had driven her car off the road.
