Who Am I?

Why are we here? Where did we come from?

These questions are timeless, and have arguably been the driving force behind every cultural renaissance throughout the evolution of Homo sapiens. Scientists are ostensibly the leaders in this quest for knowledge, but to unequivocally say so would be a blatant insult to the vanguards of spirituality. Instead of arbitrarily dismissing the tenets of belief as negligible, it becomes obligatory for those more pragmatic individuals to be more pliant in their own convictions.

Every creed has its genesis to explain the origins of the world. Many are adamant in their belief that the entire universe was brought into being by the mere word of God. While others may insist that such an arduous task being accomplished in six days is a ridiculous supposition, a common retort is to refer back to the omnipotence of God, whose motives are inscrutable.

The benefits of having a system of belief are manifold, and thus warrant proper consideration of life according to inviolable principles. However, the legacy of the war between science and religion is a generation aloof from traditional institutions. Adding to this loss of a classic cultural identity is the proximity of the wealth of information available through the internet, not all of which can be relied upon for candor.

There have always been opportunities for unscrupulous members of society to take advantage of their fellow men and women, and they are adept at finding ever more subtle ways to subjugate their victims. In modern times, businesses saturate potential customers with tawdry advertisements on social media in the hope that the less prudent might click to their hearts’ delight and generate not only sporadic revenue but also a clearer picture of a customer’s identity.

The capricious nature of the internet has only become more obvious as it has become increasingly ubiquitous. Of the 7.5 billion people alive today, more than 2 billion are connected to Facebook or one of its subsidiaries. To paraphrase recent reporting, each of those profiles is constantly tracked for 98 different data points used to create targeted advertisements for users with similar personalities. However, companies like Google and Facebook work hard to create congenial and personable facades to neutralize concerns over the volume and intimacy of the data that is being handed over.

When two people say the same thing at the same time, it is uncanny. But the question of identity is unique for every human being, to which concurrent answers are practically non-existent. In modern times, the sense of community and individual identity found while hunter-gathering or going to church has all but disappeared. It has become possible for a corporation to have a better sense of an individual’s identity than that individual might have of him- or herself. This state of affairs can understandably lead to moroseness, or else result in flippancy in matters that previously would have been treated with deference. An individual’s identity is not just a name given at birth- it is the sum of present experiences, past decisions, and dreams of the future.
