A Heartwarming Tale Of My Fluff Balls

Starting right from keeping fishes in the aquarium, raising dwarf hamsters and finally keeping a dog. My journey has been an adventurous one. It was hard convincing my parents to keep pets. Any how, I managed.

My mom always had good counters for whatever topic I used to put up in front of her. My plea never worked. She always told me: " It’s already difficult to raise you, how will I manage a dog?, You can’t shoulder all the responsibilities. Can you?" And I could do nothing other than to say a simple “no”. It was just a declaration that I had to close the topic and find something else to talk about. It has taken me five long years to convince her. Believe me! My struggle has been real.

But she cared for me at the end of the day. I was always busy finding a pet who required the least care or was atleast manageable. I came across hamsters. The term was pretty new to me. I showed it to my mom and she was like: "What kind of mouse is this?" It was a challenge, explaining her the difference between a mouse and a Hamster. But guess what! My mom agreed and promised me that if I cared for this little creature, she would bring me a dog too. I was more than ready.I stuck to Google for the rest of the day and searched all the breeds and nearest pet shops where I could find hamsters. In a place like India, its not easy to get information about such adorable creatures. Maybe because people don't know about them at all. The most common pets are dogs, cats and occasionally parrots and singing birds. I was never in favour of keeping birds because I couldn't restrict their freedom to a cage. They were meant to fly and ofcourse I couldn't bring them the sky to make them feel at home.

Regardless of my efforts, I found a pet shop. My mom inquired them about hamsters and Voila! They had a pair of hamsters. They sent us the pictures and my face glowed with excitement. The pair were white, just like cotton balls. Their red eyes took my heart away and I asked my mom: "Mumma! Can we get them tomorrow?" And she said why not?

I was thrilled, didn’t sleep all night because I was thinking for their names. “Scrolling through Google for the most adorable list of names, two names hit me -Ruby and Max.” I found them very catchy. Next day, we went to the shop and brought them home. They were so soft to touch that its hard to compare their fluffy fur with anything and their presence was fun-filled. They had come with a light blue cage with all of their accessories in place. Like bottles, bowls and muesli. I played with them all day. Cuddled them and left them open in a bolted room so that they could venture around with no one stepping on them. We called it their dayout.

Things went by.I loved their company. I fed them everyday but then came a day when I found Ruby lying very still inside. I called her , stroked her fur coat but she laid still. It was the first death of a beloved one that I had experienced. I was shocked. Shocked for days. But then Max was still left. So I continued to play with him and never made him feel alone. We all loved him. One day mom suggested me that we can bring one more Hamster for Max. He can have friends.

I agreed. We again contacted the same pet shop and they sent us some pictures of a pair of hamsters again. These little fellas had brown spots all over their white fur. Both of them were the most adorable creatures I had ever seen. We brought them too. I named them Tubby and Ruby again. With the lapse of time, I saw that Ruby wasn't getting along with Max that well and Tubby also wrestled him all day. Therefore, for the sake of Max's safety, we had to put Tubby and Ruby in a different cage. We used to let them wander around at different times so that they could enjoy their dayout.

Slowly, Max was also growing old and he was going to leave me soon. I knew it because he had caught one skin disease which was no less than an excuse. When death comes, Destiny plays it’s final move and finds an excuse to take our dear ones away. I remember the night he was suffering with pain, my mom and I chanted for his soul’s peace and he departed too the very next day. I accepted the truth because death is the only ultimate truth, rest is delusion. He had lived for two years, and it was a good time we had with him. Next were the turns of Ruby and Tubby. Ruby was the first to leave and Tubby followed her afterwards. My mom and I planted a lemon plant in their memory. Lemons always shoot out of the flowers in the summer days. Each fruit reminds me of them and keeps that everlasting experience alive in my heart.

My wounds were covered because we had brought Dhanush, my dog at that time. Tubby had left me only after three days of Dhanush’s arrival. My pain was healed but I still miss them terribly.

But they went by and taught me that life goes on.Neither does anyone wait for someone’s departure or stop after someone’s departure. We get engaged in our work and time heals the intensity of pain with time. Because otherwise, we all would have lost our senses. Such is the illusion of the creator.

I believe there are just two realities - the present and the end. All that is in my control is to cherish every moment with my beloved ones.Fearing that they will die someday shouldn’t be a hindrance that binds us and stops us from serving them. For the rest of my life, I want to feed the hungry, give the needy and love the lonely.
