GEN Z

Gen Z, Generation Z, 1997–2012. How are we doing? We’ll be alright. This too shall pass, I promise.

COVID19 has instilled a consistent fear in all of us. Our personal lives, our career, our economy, our country, everything only adds on to the mounting pressure that we already are experiencing. We are looked down upon, told we are not enough, told we are not doing enough, told we’ll go nowhere and so much more. But what makes everything even worse is that nobody sees our hard work, nobody sees our struggles, our fight with ourselves to stay, for just one more day.

We, as a generation, are not lazy. We are not self-centered and we surely are not arrogant. We are unmotivated, stressed, and most of all, tired. Tired of all the expectations posed on us. Tired of all the rules, the conditions, the abuse, the ignorance, the bullying, tired of being left out. We are SCARED!!! Trust me when I say this, ‘WE ARE SCARED’. We have constantly been tugged between what was taught to us by the older generation and the changes that the future needs. We are supposed to be leading the change; but it’s difficult, for we don’t know and we are scared of the outcome. We are scared of not doing well and sacrificing another generation like us.

It takes a lot in us to stay motivated. It takes a lot to wake up in the morning and get out of bed for our normal functioning. We are so emotionally down to do anything beyond our daily chores. And some days (most of the days for a lot of people), doing our daily chores is difficult too. Once again, it is not because we are lazy, it is because we are not in the right mental state. Mental illness is real and a lot of us go through it. It is sad how people do not consider that and accuse us of being lazy and arrogant. We are far from that.

We want to do something for the country, something for the world, try bringing in some change; Be a revolution! Each of us wants to make the world a better place, but there is only so much we can do with our mental health at stake. It is exhausting, but we are trying.

We belong to the age group 8–23. From school to entering a job. We are uncertain of our future. We don’t know what tomorrow holds and are always at the edge expecting something worse to happen. Some of us are worried about high pay jobs while others are worried about job satisfaction. Some of us follow the “You only live once, enjoy your lives to the fullest”, while some of us follow the, “You only live once, secure your future”, motos. We are confused as to what to do with no one to guide us through.

We, as a generation are completely confused. On one side, we’ve got our personal lives, family, friendships, other relationships, commitments, and so on. While on the other side, we’ve got our professional lives, school, assignments, college, exams, career path, job, etc. On yet another side, there is the country, the world, politics, economy, social inequalities, racism, sexism, and so much more. All we ask for, is, cut us some slack! We are working hard, as hard as we possibly can. We are struggling too, understand us.

We would love it if you would support us and stand by us while we try and achieve the goals we’ve set, the changes we wish to see and the betterment we know we can bring. If you cannot or do not want to support us, please do not demotivate us or bring us down. That’s the least we ask of you. Please understand us, help us through if possible, but don’t make things worse for us.
