Why did Apple create the Dynamic Island?

With the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple has shrunk the notch and packed the front sensors & camera into a compact arrangement separated by a space. Rather than leaving it at that, they’ve filled in the space with black pixels and created a new area that can be utilised as a multi-tasking/notification function.

They’ve called it the ‘Dynamic Island’ and fancy marketing name aside, it has a lot of people excited. On the surface, it doesn’t seem that interesting. There are already dedicated parts of the OS for multi-tasking & notifications that have worked adequately for years. The execution is, however, slick and works well out of the box without requiring apps to be updated.

Why did they create this feature?

Most product features are designed with a purpose in mind. They are either contributing to an overall goal with the product or addressing a key pain point of the user-base.

Let’s look at a few reasons why the Dynamic Island may have been developed:

In likelihood, it’s a combination of reasons 2 & 3 that the Dynamic Island was developed. There was not one strong enough purpose that led to its development but there were marginal gains and importantly it was marketable. It’s not a feature they had to create but one the product and development team would have enjoyed working on. It’s gotten people talking & writing about it and created hype which fits right into the company’s playbook.

Apple’s flexing its design muscles rather than solving a real problem or serving an important purpose with this release. Nevertheless, history suggests it will no doubt be copied by competitors and be desired by users of other devices.
